I came to Westwood doing Maths, Chemistry and German for A Levels. I was part of the Oxford New College Step Up Programme and had always thought that I would go on to attend University. Work Experience completely changed my view on education and my future career.Initially I was looking for a placement in a chemical engineering company however they had no places available. Mr Hill recommended SAS Water - a Legionella Control company. I didn’t expect a lot, firstly due to my previous work experience with my dad, which was an office job that I found a bit boring. Secondly, my focus was on Chemistry, and I was disappointed I couldn’t do something more closely related to the subject. However, the experience really took me by surprise with how much I enjoyed it. The work consisted of several site visits, including Factories, Stadiums and Dental Practices to name a few. What I most enjoyed was the variety. Each day was different and it was the opposite of my Y10 Work Experience. As I enjoyed it so much, I ended up doing more work experience during the Easter break of Y13. This confirmed to me that I wanted to pursue it as a career. I have now been working with the company since September as an apprentice risk assessor and I am due to start a plumbing course in April/May this year which I am very much looking forward to. I have grown in confidence and independence travelling the country visiting sites on my own and carrying out whichever control measures are necessary.Since starting work I have come to realise the value of work experience. Whilst I understand I am in a very small minority of people that come to get a career out of work experience, I recognise the benefit from my first placement with my dad. I discovered it’s equally as valuable to work out the sort of job you don’t want as finding a job you enjoy.Oliver – Former WWC 6th Student
